CHLORIDE EXIDE BOTSWANA
Add approved battery grade water to cover the plates by 10 to 15 mm. Only distilled or deionised water should be used. Acid should not be added unless electrolyte has been lost through spillage.
Ensure the battery is kept clean and dry, and that the posts, terminals and cables are clean, tight and protected against corrosion. The battery must also be correctly located and secured in the vehicle.
A hydrometer can be used to determine the specific gravity of the electrolyte. A fully charged battery normally records between 1.250 and 1.260, or approximately 12.6 volts when tested with a voltmeter.
Inadequate charging, a faulty alternator, loose or corroded connections, parasitic electrical loads and long periods without use can all discharge a battery.
A discharged battery should be charged and retested before it is discarded, unless its age or visible mechanical damage clearly warrants replacement.
