01

Guide to health and safety

The handling and proper use of lead acid batteries is not hazardous when appropriate facilities are available and operators are instructed, adequately supervised and take reasonable care. Batteries contain sulphuric acid, which is poisonous and corrosive. Always keep batteries upright, charge in a well ventilated area and use eye protection and protective clothing where there is a risk of splashing.

02

Emission of gases

Hydrogen and oxygen are emitted during charging. Avoid sources of ignition close to the battery. Do not smoke or use naked flames, always switch off the current before making or breaking electrical connections, and avoid sparks caused by accidental short circuits.

03

Storage and maintenance

All batteries should be stored in a cool, dry place and in an upright position. Battery stock should be rotated on a first in, first out basis. Batteries stored for long periods without charging can suffer grid corrosion and sulphation, resulting in a loss of electrical capacity.

04

Battery removal and installation

Before removing the battery, identify the grounded terminal. Disconnect the grounded cable first to prevent sparks. Clean the tray, terminals and cable clamps, check the replacement battery's state of charge and install it with the correct polarity. Connect the ungrounded cable first, then the grounded cable.

05

Common causes of failure

Do not blame the battery until the complete system has been checked. Common causes include life expiry, poor maintenance, low electrolyte levels, faulty or corroded cables, poor charging and parasitic electrical loads.
